Anne Walmsley Archive (papers and correspondence with leading West Indian writers)

1961 - 2000

Correspondence and related papers of some leading West Indian writers and publishers dating from the early 1960s to 2000. A large part of the collection relates to Edward Kamau Brathwaite, a leading Caribbean poet and historian who received a doctorate from the University of Sussex in 1968. The files include some of Brathwaite's personal papers, correspondence between Braithwaite and Walmsley and works by Brathwaite (radio talks, essays and manuscripts). Other correspondents who feature in the collection are: Hazel Campbell, Jan Carew, Frank Collymore, John Figueroa, Evan Jones, John Robert Lee, V.S. Naipaul, V.S. Reid, Samuel Selvon, Arthur Seymour, Anson Gonzales, Ian McDonald, Henry Swanzy, Philip Nanton, John Wickham, Wilson Harris, Mervyn Morris.

Papers relating to 'The Sun's Eye: West Indian Writing for Young Readers', compiled by Walmsley in 1968, including notes about the writers, proposed contents, a copy of the manuscript and correspondence between Walmsley and the contributors.
Papers relating to the anthology 'Facing the Sea: A New Anthology from the Caribbean Regions', compiled by Anne Walmsley and Nick Caistor, 1984 - 1993, including correspondence with the contributors and correspondence between Walmsley and the book's chief consultant Jack Cohen.
Reviews and letters for 'The Sun's Eye' (both the Longman 1968 edition and the Longman 1989 New Edition) and 'Facing The Sea' (Heinemann, 1986).
